Event Details

The Anesthesiology Center for Patient Simulation at the University of Utah offers realistic immersive patient simulation education for ABA Diplomates seeking to fulfill their Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement (PPAI) requirement for MOCA® and/or MOCA-SUBS Critical Care. This simulation course may be used to fulfill part of the ABA’s Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA®) requirements. Please consult the ABA website for a list of all MOCA® requirements. The simulation program at the University of Utah has been endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologist’s (ASA) Committee on Simulation Education to provide high quality training to ASA members.

Participants will manage a lively series of simulated adverse events in a variety of patient care settings. Participants will undergo a brief orientation to the simulation equipment and then be asked to change into scrubs and provide care to a variety of simulated patients. Each participant will be asked to take the lead as the primary decision maker on at least one simulated event throughout the day. Other activities will include playing the role of other clinicians found in the perioperative theater (such as a surgeon, operating room nurse and others) and evaluating colleagues as they observe a scenario. These simulations will include the use of a high fidelity patient simulator (Laerdal SimMan 3G and/or METI HPS).

Simulated events will primarily focus on topics germane to the practice of anesthesia. Additionally, curriculum is available for physicians seeking MOCA-SUBS Critical Care subspecialty training.
