Event Details

Thank you for your interest in obtaining the simulation-based portion of your Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) training at the University of Virginia (UVa) Medical Simulation Center.  The inclusion of simulation education as a Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement activity by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) highlights the importance of simulation-based education for the practicing anesthesiologist.  The center proudly received endorsement by the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) in July 2010 as one of the 20 charter MOCA Centers.  This endorsement enables the Medical Simulation Center to serve the national community through involvement in MOCA simulation initiatives and as a member of the ASA Simulation Education Network.  The center is happy to offer a first-rate, value-oriented educational course in a high-fidelity simulated environment specifically designed for ASA members.  This simulation course fulfills one requirement of the ABA’s MOCA Program Part IV.  Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for a list of all MOCA requirements.

Training Description

Physicians will actively participate in realistic simulation scenarios that require management of unfavorable clinical problems and highlight teamwork skills.  The participant to instructor ration will not exceed 5 to 1 in order ensure a quality learning experience.  Every course for participants without simulation experience begins with pre-briefing to discuss the educational goals and objectives.  Additionally, participants are introduced to the simulator capabilities in order to have knowledge of a baseline physical exam on a “healthy simulation”.  Following this pre-briefing, participants will focus on several case scenarios relevant to anesthesia care topics including hemodynamic events, hypoxemic crises, and teamwork skills.  Each participant will rotate through different roles in the scenario, acting as primary anesthesiologist at least once.  Session will be recorded and immediately reviewed with participants to debrief from each role’s viewpoint on clinical skills and teamwork interaction.  These recordings are for the benefit of the participants only and will not be released under any circumstances.
